Session on Intersex, Theology and the Bible at Society for Biblical Literature Annual Meeting 2015

A review session on my new edited book Intersex, Theology, and the Bible: Troubling Bodies in Church, Text, and Society (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) is taking place at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Atlanta, Georgia this November.

As well as reflecting on the book itself, the panellists will take the opportunity to show how biblical images, texts, arguments and themes intersect with ongoing intersex advocacy and research today. I am honoured to have been asked to respond and am grateful to Joseph Marchal for convening the session.

Here's the draft information on the session from the SBL program book (subject to change):

This session investigates the staging, effects and subversive potential of recent cases of controversial art in which iconic Christian imagery is deliberately queered: e.g., the so-called Christas or female crucifixions, and the winning act "Rise Like a Phoenix" at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest interpreted as a transgender Jesus imitation.

  1. Thanks for posting this, Susannah! Both sessions look fascinating. I'm especially excited to see that more scholars are looking at the queer Christ in controversial art!
